Lemon Balm

Many of my family, friends and clients often speak of stress that comes with their daily living experience, between work demands, family and other related life responsibilities we are all looking for ways to wind down and relax when seeking alternative methods to calm our environment and our senses. Today is a short blog where I will share with you an herb that has been known to offer support in this area and I hope that your interest increases to learn more about this ancient healing herb.

Lemon Balm

Latin Name: Melissa officinalis

Family: Lamiaceae (The mint family of flowering plants)

Part Used: Leaf

Energy: Cool

Growing Conditions: Grow lemon balm in well-drained, sandy loam. However, lemon balm will grow in almost any soil but not very wet soil. It prefers a slightly higher pH balance and starting seeds indoors is a good method. As part of the mint family, it grows easily in Florida.

Lemon Balm has been a favorite among beekeepers and also goes by other names such as “bee balm”. In the past many European herbalists would prescribe it for just about anything like headache, toothache, sores and camps. Today it is best known for its soothing qualities for the stomach, nerves and it sedative effects when supporting insomnia, it is also given for analgesic support. Another known property is that lemon balm contains polyphenols that help support fighting several bacterial infections and may bring relief to wound pain. Lemon balm is also supportive to the digestive system as a carminative, stomachic and antispasmodic support.

Once use of this herb besides making it as a tea is to use it for a relaxing bath. You can take a handful of lemon balm and tie it in a cloth and run bath water over it as it offers a calming effect and lemony aroma.

Please note: As with any herb/herb supplement it is recommended that you talk with your physician prior to use and any therapeutic additions to your personal health care routine.
